Before we learn how to train our minds to have positive thoughts, we need to recognize negative thoughts. BLUE thoughts.

What are BLUE thoughts?

We have over 70,000 thoughts every day. Thoughts can have a big impact on your mood, affecting how you behave. It’s important to acknowledge that thoughts happen automatically, but this doesn’t mean you can’t control how you react to or think about them.

The term “BLUE” stands for
B- Blaming yourself
L- Looking for the bad news
U- Unhappy guessing
E- Exaggeratedly negative

Blaming Yourself

While it is important to be responsible for your actions, you shouldn’t blame yourself excessively. This can be counterproductive. Studies show that when you blame yourself too much, this can hurt your mental health and cause depression. Make sure that you identify the times when you feel like everything that’s going wrong is your fault and offer some self-pity through stopping to recognize your own actions without being too hard on yourself.

Looking For the Bad News

Everyone has had days when everything seems perfect, only to be disrupted by one horribly unfortunate incident. Hey, we all have those days. But the question is, what did you do after that? What did you focus more on?

I do not know about you, but I kept on thinking about what had ruined the day. Many people focus on the negative things that happen to them rather than all the positive. If you dwell on one bad thing too much, it can feel hopeless and make you upset. Try not to focus too much on what goes wrong, but brush it off and try forgetting about it. This way, you will create a balanced and realistic plan to be happy, even amid the bad breaks.

Unhappy Guessing

It’s hard to know what the future holds. The world may be an even better place than it is today. Sometimes we give in to imagination about the future, which can be a bad thing. For example, you might find yourself preparing for a presentation tomorrow or an exam as if there’s something that will go wrong. In your mind, you’re thinking about how you’ll embarrass yourself or fail to perform at your best.

When you are unhappy with your current situation, you will likely start acting like it. And this will inevitably lead to the prediction coming true.

There is always an opportunity to turn out better than we imagine. There might be negative parts of the process, but don’t forget to focus on all the positive things that can come of it.

Exaggeratedly Negative

When you tell yourself the whole experience was a great disaster, it can affect your mood, and you start to convince yourself that everything is stupid. The truth is that negativity yields negativity, so try to stay positive and consider everything a learning experience.

How to Train Your Mind to Turn BLUE thoughts into Positive Thoughts

After recognizing the negative thoughts, we need to change that negative mindset into a positive one. Below are the steps that can help to achieve a positive mindset.

Step 1: Observe Your Thoughts

The truth is, negative thoughts often arise at a certain time or place. For example, people are creatures of habit, which means that if they have negative thoughts at home because they are overwhelmed with work, they might also experience them when spending time with their family. And vice versa.

One of the most effective ways to eliminate negative thoughts is to keep track of them. Once you know the patterns they follow, you’ll be able to devise a plan for eliminating them. For instance, if a job interview is causing you stress, you will start preparing early and asking people who have attended similar interviews for advice. All you need is to monitor your thoughts and spot any negativity from external sources.

Step 2: Record Three Positive Encounters Everyday

Every day we have a range of experiences – some bad, some good. You can find happiness in many forms, like when someone buys a coffee for you at the office, walks with you during a favorite activity, or new clients. It can also be small things like complimenting a coworker/friend, bumping into an old friend, making a new friend, or watching you. Before going to bed, you can reflect on three positive experiences from today.

Step 3: Sharing Gratitude

Gratefulness has a variety of benefits. It can provide someone with an optimistic mood and even help fend off heart disease. The best place to start is by writing down everything you are grateful for every day in a gratitude journal.  However, I have learned that sharing gratitude is far more fulfilling and satisfying in life than just writing it down.

Here, you can record just about anything – from thanking yourself/child/spouse for all the hard work they do to complimenting your friend or spouse on something they did. Hear them out and connect with them the way only a support network can!

Step 4: Help Others

Every day, there are many opportunities to help others. Most people think that “helping” means just giving money. However, there are many other ways to help somebody–from organizing somebody’s work to befriending somebody. You could help someone in the kitchen or do the dishes by using your robot. You could hold the door for someone, buy a cup of coffee for them, or volunteer somewhere instead. Think about what you can do for someone today. Make it a daily goal to do anything that makes someone’s day better, and you’ll find that positivity starts to enter your own life.

Step 5: Surround Yourself with Positive People

Surrounding yourself with positive people can help you live a healthier and more prosperous life.

When you spend time predominantly with a person, they can profoundly impact how you operate. This is why it’s important to pay attention to the people you interact with the most. If your friends or family members enjoy complaining and blaming others, this negative behavior will likely transfer over to yourself too.

Step 6: Look After Your Body And Mind

Taking care of your physical and mental health will improve happiness and satisfaction in different aspects of your life. It’s through this that your mind will gradually learn to think positively.

Mindfulness is an important practice for staying aware of your thoughts and feelings without judging them. For example, when you eat well and exercise regularly, it will generally lift your mood and change the general outlook you have of life. One way to train your mind to think optimistically is by meditating and practicing mindfulness through yoga. You can do this by setting three separate alarms throughout the day. After hearing the beep, you take a break to breathe deeply. This habit comes in handy for restoring balance and lowering stress levels.

Step 7: Let Go Of All The Negativity

One way of becoming positive is identifying and letting go of all the negative thoughts. This might sound like a huge undertaking, but by identifying bit by bit and letting it go, they’ll eventually disappear. These negative thoughts are often the cause of our struggles in life. Such thoughts are often thought to bring us pain, but acceptance can lead to peace & happiness. When we learn to detach ourselves from negative thoughts, we’ll build new mental systems that reinforce positive thinking, leading us to an empowered future.

Step 8: Make Time To Do Things You Love

It isn’t easy to stay positive in this world, but if you take time to recognize the things you enjoy – it can make a big difference. Start by making a list and then try and do one thing that makes you happy each day. This could be reading, singing, teaching, sports, movies, or cooking, among others.

Start by setting aside just an hour a day from your day to do something that you love or give you pleasure. Giving yourself some time for the things that impact your happiness and filling you with a sense of fulfillment will make you happier and more at peace. It’s best to do it when you’re not too busy or distracted. You will soon realize how they have changed your thinking by being more positive than you ever thought possible.

Conclusion:

Now that you know how to recognize the BLUE thoughts, it is time to put the steps to have a positive mindset into action!
